Fat

What is fat?

Fats are the most concentrated form of energy. They are made up of glycerol (also called glycerine) and fatty acids. There are four main types of fat – trans fats, saturated fats, poly-unsaturated fats and mono-unsaturated fats. The latter two are important for good health.

Which foods contain fat?

Fats are found in a variety of foods. Some fats are clearly visible, such as the fat you see in meats and cooking oils while other fats are hidden in foods such as biscuits, pastries, chips, cakes and full fat dairy foods.

  • Food sources of saturated fats include meat , dairy foods and coconut.
  • Food sources of poly-unsaturated fats include fish, walnuts, sunflower seeds, soy beans, cottonseeds and safflower oil.
  • Food sources of mono-unsaturated fats include olive oil, peanut oil, canola oil, some nuts (almonds, pecans, cashews, and peanuts) and meat.

How much fat do we need?

It is recommend that between 20 - 35% of the total energy from the food you consume should come from fat, with no more that 10% of energy coming from saturated and trans fats combined. Remember - moderation is the aim, not elimination,
